Faces and More Faces

Hard to believe it's already the last day of January! I have been doing more art that I want to share with you especially from a workshop I am taking online called Face to Face, taught by a wonderful artist Misty Mawn.  I have heard such good things about Misty's classes that I was intrigued.  I have to say, even in the 2nd week of the class, I am absolutely loving it!  What a challenge.  There are people in the class with me as students that I look up to who are also great instructors in their own right, plus so many other amazing artists.  I am honored to be creating with them!

I am already feeling challenged and stretched - just what I needed. Each week there are many video tutorials and art/drawing assignments, a writing assignment, and a recipe!  Even included is a selection of music to create by.  Wow.

Week 1 was about drawing with graphite and charcoal for the most part.

Line drawing from a Yearbook photo

Charcoal drawing with shading.

Graphite with shading portrait. I am pretty happy about this one!

Charcoal drawing with a little pastel background.  Hard to get good detail in a small space.

Week 2 (this past week) has been about using pastels mainly, though I have only just started on the lesson!

Still a work in progress, but I am liking it so far.  I am finding working with pastels similar to paint in that I can layer colors and build them up gradually. Actually quite fun! Still LOTS more to do on this one and many other assignments left to tackle!  I'm learning so much!

I love being challenged and really want my art to move into more interpretive pieces, and not so precise and literal. I'll do my best to post more regularly now.

Thanks for reading!

Hi Arlene. I'm so pleased you are sharing this work all in one place. It's so great to see what you are learning. I'm loving the beginning of your pastel portrait - can't wait to see the progress. The course sounds wonderful - you will learn so much. hugs, Donna

Lovely work, Arlene. My classes with Misty are among the most valuable of any I've taken. Your faces look great!
